Self-Torture: Training for a Half Marathon

Okay, so every time I mention to people that I have decided to run a half marathon in 2012, I get hit with the raised eyebrow and the quizzical expression that silently asks: Why would anyone do such a thing to themselves? Well, to be honest, running 13.1 miles isn’t something I really want to do, but its almost something that I HAVE To DO!

Last year in 2011, my boss’s husband decided 2 weeks before the race date to run a marathon. Yes folks, a full 26 mile marathon! I was blown away! He isn’t even a runner! He plays baseball throughout the year, but running the diamond every couple batters does not compare to drudging one’s body 26 miles through the streets of Charlotte, NC!  When my boss came to work and told me what her honey was planning last year, I secretly admit that i never thought he’d do it. I mean, c’mon .. i figured he’d run the first couple miles and then leisurely jog/walk/jog /walk/walk/walk the rest! But to my disbelief he ran the entire thing and did so with flying colors. (I’m not sure of exact times but I know it was a little over 4 hours!) He averaged about 9 mins/mile, I think! How friggin awesome for someone who doesn’t even run like that!

Well this year, he said that he was toying with the idea of doing an IRONMAN. **For those that don’t know–(per Wikipedia.com) An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon 42.195-kilometre (26.219 mi) run, raced in that order and without a break. All events must be completed within 17 hours! Now, I don’t know why he’s taken on the challenge, but when I heard my boss make the announcement at work, out of no where I heard my own voice say: “if [He] does a triathlon this year, I’m definitely doing a half marathon!”

Whoa, where did that come from? I’m looking around to no avail because the only one in my cubical is me! LOL! Needless to say, it shocked me that I’d said it, but 4 days later, my boss sent me an emailed confirmation that the madd man had registerd for his race, included with this email was the message: “GAME ON”. I  haven’t found a race, I’m hesistant to register at all because to be honest, I don’t think I’d enjoy running 13.1 miles..(only crazy people take on challenges like this!)  but, if he can make the decision to get off his butt and challenge himself physically this year to do something he’s never done that’s going to just as mentally demanding as it is physically, well…. so can I. Hey, we all need inspiration from somewhere! And so … let the games begin!
